Dr. Ron Barrett

Dr. Ron Barrett earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering in 1988 from the University of Kansas, a Master of Science degree from the University of Maryland in 1990 and a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering in 1993 from the University of Kansas. 

He has more than 300 professional publications including the first US Patent on adaptive aerostructures. He currently holds more than a dozen patents, with a 67% licensing rate. He is a winner of Discover Magazine's Discover Award for Aviation and Aerospace Technology and Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. His career in adaptive materials began in 1989 with the invention of a new family of adaptive materials and associated aerospace structures. His work on adaptive materials continues to this day as he pioneers in adaptive materials applications for the US Department of Defense. 


Mr. R. P. Barrett

Mr. R. P. Barrett earned his Bachelor's degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Miami University in 1967. As an advanced process engineer working for NCR, he pioneered in photochromic microimages for the Apollo program, supporting lunar lander operations. 

A decorated USAF Combat Veteran with 39 years of service as a weaponeer, navigator and bombardier, he has vast technical experience with many materials and structures. Mr. Barrett is the inventor of the Thermadapt™ family of materials. In 2009 he first laminated materials with vastly different coefficients of thermal expansion to prototype the new class of adaptive materials. By including the advanced design techniques behind F-15 inlet panels and adaptive missile fin control mechanisms he methodically improved his invention over the coming seven years. 


Technical Staff

The laboratory staff pioneering in Thermadapt discoveries include mostly Bachelors and Masters students in Aerospace, Civil and Architectural Engineering. A wide range of skill sets from welding to composites manufacturing to structural testing are resident.
